To the Old Fort and the Show Gallery Building

It was raining, really just sprinkling

It is spring and the flowers are coming out.

We saw the plantings as we walked to the Old Fort

 

 You can see the raindrops on the camera lens.

We are walking over the contemporary bridge over the moat. The mainland is on the right.

The fort is on the left. Quite a moat. The Venetians built the fort in 1542.

You can see the buds are just coming out on the trees on the left.

In the far distance, to the right of center, you can see Antonis' boat out of the water with its red hull.

A detail of the pic. Look for the red hull. The propeller shaft bearing began to leak.

This required taking the boat out of the water to remove the shaft. Then a broken motor mount was discovered. Now the engine has been removed. Now the exposed bilge is getting cleaned and repainted. A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.

We met with the Superintendent of the Archeological preservation of the fort.

I gave her a print from last years visit that I made for her because she had given me a reproduction of a fourth century carving last year.

You can see a man on the right going into the tunnel leading to the third level of the fort.

 Outside her office you can see the fourth and fifth levels of the fort. The covered opening in the lower right looks down into the three levels below in the bowels of the fort.

It is quite pleasant. You will be seeing more of it as Antonis and I get to work installing.

The name of the gallery is intriguing.

 Leaving the fort the sun was coming out. You are looking at the Church of St Nicolos built into the wall of the mainland.

Walking home Antonis said "Come look, there is the ferry we were on yesterday".

You can see, at the top in the center, the bridge I stood and looked into. (And made a movie.)

The Photography Club Critique

It was a two day trip, with lots of snapshots.

We left Keykira for a two hour ferry boat ride to the mainland.

Beyond the island is the entrance to the harbor of Igoumenitsa

 

 

    It is dramatic. The ferry pulls up, literally, to the shore and let's its ramp down. And out come the people and the cars.

 

We left for the 100 Kilometer drive to the city of Preveza.

Guess what?

 The bracket holding the muffler broke. So many memories of my travel days.

Antonis said it is "normal for the course".

We got to the hotel where they had put us up. I don't know if it was intentional or not.

The decor, which Antonis said was he felt, "Chi Chi" included a camera collection.

 

We went to the gallery where the critique took place.

It had a beautiful ceiling.

While we were waiting to start I and a club member had a "snapshot shootoff".

Antonis showed his work and lectured and then I showed a few images of mine.

We then critiqued 35 photographers. Each had about 10 images. The age range was from 11 to the mid fifties. It took a little over four hours with a couple of short breaks.

A variety of work and approaches, and experience. There were approximately 60 to 70 people.

 

It was a workout and afterwards we went to eat and relax.

At dinner everyone had fun making "portraits" of each other.

He was sitting in the front row at the crit.

He was sitting at the front table and talked a lot.

The next morning we left by the hotel's back door.

We passed some Roman Ruins. (I had met the night before an archeologist who has been working on them for six years)

This is a very small sample of extensive ruins.

Back at the ferry ticket office. No one stands in line. They crowd around. Antonis is waiting to get us on the 10:00 ferry so he can get back for a Telemann concert in Kerkyra.

The big (big) tour buses are waiting to get on.

 We got in just in time.

Three different sized ferries. The one on the right goes overnight to Venice.

It has luxury staterooms. Or a cheaper ticket gives you a "chair".

We pass more island Roman Ruins on the way back. The ambiance is strong.

We come past the old fort at Kerkyra on the way to our shore docking.

You can see the street entrance to Antonis and Maria's home marked with red on the right side of the image. The fort was built in 1542, their home in the early 1700's.

An Old Friend

This afternoon an old friend looked at me and said,

"Are you here again?"

Last year he was getting rained on

This year he sat in the sun

 

So, things are back to normal, and it feels good

 

Tomorrow we go on the ferry to the mainland port of Igoumenitsa. From there we drive to Preveza. We will meet with a local photography group, do a presentation and crit.

Then the next day we do the return trip. I am anticipating a fun time. 

 

Antonis and I did a 2 1/2 hour crit this morn of a former student who now lives and works in Touluse, France.

Will have a nap after a few words here.

This coming Saturday. Off to the mainland to meet with a Photo group who are putting Antonios and I up for a night after sharing and critiquing.

Looking forward to the ferry and car trip.

The fun begins.

Took off at 6:05 (18:05) Tues eve. Sunset about an hour later.

Arrived at Paris (Charles De Gualle) at 6:15(6:15) a little more than six hours later.

Below, and to the right of the Old Fort is a J shaped pier. In other words, to the South and below the park.  Antonis's boat is moored inside it.

Flew over and onward for one hour to Athens. Then a wait for the one hour local flight back to Kerkyra.
