Rome

Early morning, before going to the airport
Coming into Rome it was raining.
The tourists under their umbrellas
Later in the day, a view from their balcony
The ceiling is beautiful
(Antonis trained as an architect. He has completely gutted the apartment and refurbished, rebuilt it. Almost done.)
Antonis cutting cheese while Eleana and her boyfriend Alberto watch and talk.
You see the entrance on the left, the kitchen, the bathroom on the right.
Antonis and Maria's bedroom is over the kitchen with their own bathroom to the right
Eating a light lunch.
Time for a nap and then out for the fist sight seeing.

Saturday, The Resurrection Celebration

On Saturday, beginning about 10pm there is the Celebration of The Resurrection.
It ends at midnight when Easter Sunday begins.
The Greek Orthodox celebration is slightly different from that of Western Europe and America.
Everyone lights a candle and then watches the fireworks.
Afterwards the bands play and march through streets, and the dense crowds.

Arianna and Maria watching the fireworks
After the fireworks we wait to see the bands.
You can see Arianna and Antonis in the foreground.
All ages. I have no snaps of the bands. I made movies. They are fun.
Off to bed and Rome.

Good Friday

Starting on Wednesday and ending on Sunday the celebration of Easter on Corfu is unique to Greece.
My understanding (Antonis) is that they do more, with more completeness.
There are over 40 churches that participate in processions.
Yesterday, Good Friday they began at 10AM and ended just before midnight.
This post will be concerned with just that one day.

I had come from the church and was shooting when I discovered the I was walking into the parade marshals. I had been engaged in the national TV coverage over my head.
Moving away from the procession to show it's density
This was Just one of the morning processions.
Later, as I shot on the streets, the same band members passed me going to another formation.

The big event of the three days are three bands at 10pm Friday.
Gathering for the procession about 8pm
Antonis and Maria, and I, were invited to view the procession from one of their close friends balcony. It has a commanding view of the street, the ocean, and the mainland.
(Below, the family home and it's view of the street and ocean. In daylight obviously)

From the balcony, waiting for the procession to begin.
Looking down at the street and waterfront.
The crowd is not large yet.
Looking up and to the right is the Old Fort and one of the boat moorings.
The Governor's Palace is on the right.
Boy Scouts, waiting to parade are playing basketball. You can see the arched windows that continue off to the left, seen in the previous image.
The view to the right. The side of the Governor's Palace and it's gate to the town square.
It is still early.

Much later, the procession begins
 Images became blurry, but colorful
Watching from the balconey
So I did movies.
A long, long time later, the conclusion is The Death Bed of Christ.
His body is on flowers.
The Archbishop of Corfu (on the upper right with a white band around his ankles) proceeds the Death Bed. You can see the crowd falls in behind the procession.

Antonis asked me if the procession had been exotic. A thoughtful question. I said no, but it was profound. We go out in a few hours for the conlusion tonight, Saturday at midnight. Which brings Sunday and Easter.

We have to be at the airport by 8 tomorrow morn to fly to Rome.
I don't know when I will get to post again, but I am taking my laptop to Rome.

Back into the City - Light

I went back into the city, both it's busy and quiet streets.
The way light reflects and exists is wonderful to me.
The majority of the streets are narrow.
Buildings under repair are covered in green.
And no older street is straight

Around a corner the view can open up and you see the 4,000 passenger cruise ship with 18 floors, and the ever present pigeon.

I continue to work on my window reflections project

There are practical images and happenings.
Antonis is putting the propeller back on. He is Almost finished with his major repairs.
I don't know if he is homeless but he is eye catching

Did I mention that the city has hills?   Some have a commanding view
And it is they are constantly changing

Some views are just plain relaxing

Into the city - to "work"

Today I want to share some images other than blog images.
But first
I want to share some of the older part of the city which I go through to get to the "work"
You leave a narrow street and come into a shadowed court yard resturant

I made an image a few days ago that has sparked a project.
I will be working with the idea of reflections in window displays.
After one day I do not know where I will end up but here are a few from one day's looking.

Painterly ?

Psychology
And variations

 Historical references

And humor

Below is a "keeper"

Let me know what you think of the concept.

The city is alive with the coming Orthodox Easter
